Plates 4, 4a, 4b Asia, East India Islands, Oceania

Plate 4 has two Joycean marks, under Kandahar and Herat in Afghanistan. Kandahar, or Candahar, is where Lord Roberts won the victory which first made him famous. He links two soliloquies, Mrs Purefoy recovering from an arduous labour and Molly Bloom remembering she wore ‘a brooch for Lord Roberts when I had the map of it all’. Plates 4a and 4b have no marks discovered, but look closely to trace Germany’s belated attempts to create a Pacific empire. Its ‘concession’ from China at Kiao Chao on the Yellow Sea was very much part of this. See Plate 25.
