Plates 16, 17 Italy, Spain and Portugal
£3.00
The Italian plate has five Joycean blue-crayon marks, although two of them, Trieste and Fiume, were in the Austrian Empire at the time. The Spanish plate has eight such marks, all seaside resorts or ports. Is Joyce continuing to look for work by the sea? At the least, the mark under Trieste shows he saw it as a place that might be congenial.
